First Edition Pokémon card FAQ

What is a First Edition Pokémon card?
First Edition cards were the initial print run of English-language Pokémon TCG sets from Base Set (1999) through HeartGold & SoulSilver (2010). They carry a small "Edition 1" stamp on the left side of the card art. Once the 1st Edition run sold out, sets were reprinted as Unlimited without the stamp.
Which sets had First Edition prints?
Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Base Set 2, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, Neo Destiny, Legendary Collection, Expedition, Aquapolis, Skyridge, all EX-series, Diamond & Pearl through HeartGold & SoulSilver. Newer Black & White era sets onward dropped the 1st Edition distinction.
How much more valuable is a 1st Edition card?
It varies wildly. A Base Set 1st Edition Charizard in PSA 10 sold for over $420,000 in 2022, while the Unlimited version in the same grade trades around $10,000. Common and Uncommon 1st Editions often trade at only 2-3× the Unlimited version.
How do I authenticate a 1st Edition?
Four signals: the "Edition 1" stamp, print dot density on the border (shadowless Base Set has a sparse dot pattern), slight colour and thickness differences, and holofoil layering. For high-value cards, grade them through PSA, BGS, or CGC for guaranteed authenticity.
