Comparing Pokémon cards FAQ

Click any question to expand.

How is the winner decided?

Each card is scored across four dimensions: market price (weight 3), rarity tier (weight 2), HP (weight 1), and print year (weight 1, older wins). The card with more weighted points wins overall. Ties are called explicitly.

What does the rarity ranking mean?

Rarity tiers are ordered by short-print rate: Special Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare at the top, then Illustration / Rainbow / Secret / Shining, then Ultra Rare and the EX/GX/V family, then Rare Holo, then Rare / Uncommon / Common at the bottom. The full ladder is on /rarity.

Is the price live?

Yes. Market price is the highest variant value pulled from TCGplayer via pokemontcg.io, refreshed daily. Each card's detail page breaks out low / mid / high / direct per variant.

Why does older sometimes win the year column?

For collectibility, older sets generally carry more nostalgia premium and more limited supply (Base, Jungle, and Fossil were never reprinted in their original form). So in this comparison, "older = winner" on the print year row. If you're looking for current-format playability, that's a different question. The homepage trending and type-filtered card pages are better for that.

Can I compare more than two cards?

Not yet. The page is built for head-to-head comparison. If you want a portfolio overview of many cards, your /mycards collection page shows total value, count, and top card across whatever you've added.
